"A Salty Expanse"

If you like to drive fast and don't mind getting your car a bit dirty, then a road trip out to the Bonneville Salt Flats in western Utah is well worth the time.  Close to Wendover Air Force Base, this vast expanse of super-flat land has been the site of numerous land speed records by all sorts of vehicles.  Speed enthusiasts hold races at the Speedway each summer, but you don't have to have a race car to try out the track yourself.  Word of warning - it's easy to get lost out there without a frame of reference anywhere.  The trick is to take along a compass and track your miles driven.  I did venture out with the trailblazer, but didn't get to very high speeds - only 90 mph.  Sometimes, prudence wins out.
